Note: This is by no means a complete list. I will add others in the future.
Nonfiction Books:
The Apple Branch by Alexei Kondratiev (detailed and well-researched source of traditional Celtic customs and celebrations)
The Magic of the Celtic Gods and Goddesses by Carl McColman and Kathryn Hinds (this is wonderful and down-to-earth primer of 18 Celtic deities and heros and of Celtic spirituality – ideal for those new to the path or simply haven’t learned much about the gods and goddesses)
Ladies of the Lake by Caitlin Matthews (thought-provoking look at nine female characters from the matter of Britain – this is currently out of print and must be bought at used book stores/websites)
Avalon Within by Jhenah Telyndru (written for women; a good place to continue one’s work on self-healing from the Welsh Avalonian perspective before moving on to community/priestess work)
The Isle of Avalon by Nicholas Mann (detailed look at Glastonbury, England, as Avalon – not light reading)
Fiction Books:
The Mabinogian (a collection of early Welsh myths that are infused into the Arthurian cycle)
The History of the Kings of Britain by Geoffrey Chaucer (first mention of King Arthur, Merlin, and the Isle of Avalon in literature)
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (not only an Arthurian favorite, but an wonderful telling of the battle between the dark and light halves of the year)
Daughters of the Witching Hill by Mary Sharratt (an excellent and heart-wrenching historical fiction novel incorporating the history of the Pendle witch hunt in England)
Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley (A highly regarded friend and high priest says that any woman wanting to become a priestess would benefit from reading this book. This feminist retelling of the Arthurian story delivers hope and inspiration. The book hasn’t aged well in terms of certain social issues, so it must be read with a filter.)
The Forest House by Marion Zimmer Bradley (second written in the Mists series, this is a prequel to Mists, as are all other books in the series)
Lady of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley (third written in Mists series)
